A big week.
This is my eighth week in Cambodia (of a total of eleven) and two major things happened this week:
Firstly, I finally felt like I had gotten used to being in Cambodia. In my first days, I asked people how long it took to feel ‘settled’ here. The response was a range from ‘immediately’, ‘six weeks’ to a very honest American nurse who told me ‘You never get used to this place. You wouldn’t want to. I leave every three months to keep myself sane.’ It’s only this week that I’ve broken through the wall of tourist and observer. I’m now familiar with the city, I have favourite places, regular haunts and familiar faces.
Secondly, I’ve started to prepare to leave. Crazy right? I secured a successor, started to plan transition. I’ve reflected on what I have achieved and what is yet to go. I have created the list of tasks and actions I need to get through before leaving – this is everything from my work in Carpets for Communities, to getting a pair of covered shoes (thongs are not going to fly in Latvia). I’ve got mental lists of what needs to be packed, what needs to stay and which places I need to see.
Big week.
