Important coffee.

Cafes are the expat mecca here. A little oasis with coffee (they even serve a Flat Whites in some!), croissants and reasonably fast and reliable wifi. I’ve got a few favourite haunts, but the latest is very popular and busy with meetings. There are laptops, notepads and cables crossing the floor in an epic health and safety hazard.

Today I overheard snippets of conversation about Red Cross partnerships with a local NGO. Later, a mention of bringing people from a US office to work on poverty reduction from an organisation whose name I didn’t catch. The street outside is a sure sign of the activity inside – all of the vehicles (ranging from SUV’s to motorbikes) bear the signage of their NGO or Government agency.

It’s kind of cool to walk outside and think ‘Was the guy sitting across from me with UNESCO, Care International or Amnesty?’

These cafes are the business centres for so much of the work being done in Cambodia - I wonder if the people who own and work for the cafe realise how important their cups of coffee actually are?
